“The bugs will be my music. And the stars

will be my nightlight,” her wise son replied.

His mother smiled. “Yes.”

So they made a soft bed. They snuggled deep

under the covers. They giggled.

The mom read her son

his bedtime story.

And then it began to rain.

The rain fell softly and quietly—

unlike the boy’s tears, which came

hard and fast.

The mom held her son close and whispered in his ear.

“The sukkah will protect us—just like long ago. When the Jews left

Egypt, they wandered in the desert for many years on their way

to the Land of Israel. Their sukkahs helped protect them from the

wind and the rain. We will be like them tonight.”
